German
It is the official language of Germany and Austria and is classified as Indo-Germanic language. It is close to languages of the same family like Norwegian, Danish and Swedish. German language is also one of the three official Swedish languages and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Estimated number of German speakers is about 100 million around the world and German language courses are extensively offered in Europe. It is extensively used in theatres, government institutes and broadcasting.
German language has different pronunciation as compared to English due to long and short vowels, easy and difficult consonants and varied stress and accent marks. Although German’s language history dates back to as old as 7th century, however significant contributions by writers in 18th century has given this language the form it has today. It has gone significant changes in he history and linguists classify these three main phases as Old, Middle and New High German language. Today, Standard German which originated as a written language is used in its different varieties according to regions and which can differ in pronunciation and grammar but mainly in vocabulary. Due to this reason it is considered as a pluricentric language – a language with many standard versions. German language is written using Latin alphabets.
