Indonesian
It is the official language of Indonesia and is spoken by more than 250 million people in the world. Since Indonesia is a densely populated country and majority of the people in Indonesia speaks this language, it has become one of the world’s most spoken languages. It is the standardized dialect of Malay language and is classified as Austronesian language. In Indonesia it is called Bhasha Indonesia which means language of Indonesia. It is widely taught in schools and is a language used in government and media.
It is a phonetically consistent language and originally Indonesian is based on Latin alphabet but with the movement of independence and later after independence, significant changes in spellings were adopted. Linguists classify Indonesian as open language and many languages like Chinese, Arabic, Sanskrit, Arabic, Portuguese, Dutch and English have had a significant influence on it; in terms of loanwords and otherwise. However some words might be misleading for example ‘air’ in Indonesian language means ‘water’. Since Indonesia is comprised of thousands of islands, there are many regional varieties of this language. Word order can be Subject Verb Object or Object Verb Subject. It is an agglutinative language and new words are formed from root words using affixation, compound word and reduplication.
