Malay
It belongs to Western branch of Austronesian family of languages and is spoken in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei. Estimated number of speakers is about 18 million. Since it is geographically wide spread language, many different dialects of it exists. It is the basis of both Bhasha Malaysia and Bhasha Indonesia; the official languages of Malaysia and Indonesia respectively. It is also the official language of Brunei and Singapore.
History of Malay language is divided into four periods, Old Malay, Early Modern Malay, Late Modern Malay and Contemporary Malay. Earlier Malay language was written using Indian script. With the advent of Islam in 14th century, Malay was written using Arabic script however later on under the influence of Dutch and British, Latin script was adopted in 17th century. It is an agglutinative language and new words and formed from root words using affixation, composition and reduplication. The basic word order is Subject Verb Object. A unique feature of Malay language is its use of measure words – these are the words which are used in combination with a numeral to indicate the count of nouns. This characteristic is also found in other Asian languages like Chinese, Vietnamese, Burmese and Bengali.
