Polish



It is the official language of Poland and is spoken by majority of Polish people. Estimated number of Polish speakers is 50 million. It belongs to western branch of Slavic languages of Indo-European family of languages. It has the second largest number of speakers among Slavic languages after Russian and is the most spoken West Slavic language. It is closely related to Slovak, Bulgarian and Russian languages. Baltic languages are considered to be most similar to Polish languages. Talking about similarity, Polish and Slovak has 75% of vocabulary in common while Polish and Russian shares common words upto 60% which comes down to 40% when Polish and Bulgarian are compared. Many words from German, French and English are borrowed by Polish language though words with common spellings can have different meanings. Slavic group of languages are case languages where word order varies.

It is based on Latin alphabets and early documents in Polish appeared in 14th century before which all writing in Poland were in Latin. Only a few dialects are present that differ from Standard Polish mostly due to local pronunciation and vocabulary differences. Its grammar is based on Latin grammar with verb tenses, gender and number of nouns but no articles however usage of noun in a sentence matters.
