Portuguese (Brazil)
It is a Romance language and belongs to Italic branch of Indo-European family of languages. It is based on the dialect of Lisbon and Coimbra. It is one of the world’s major language and its speakers are estimated to be more than 200 million. It is the official language of nine countries. Standard Portuguese is a descendant of Vulgar Latin and is considered a simplified version of Latin. Historically, Portuguese written documents and literature appeared around 12th century.
Its vocabulary primarily comes from Latin but it has also some loanwords from Arabic, French and Italian. Portuguese language has many words from English also, although they may spell same, their meanings can be different. Portuguese nouns have genders. It is based on Latin alphabets with 9 oral vowels and 19 consonants whereas Brazilian Portuguese has 7 oral vowels..
Around 150 million people speak Portuguese often called Brazilian Portuguese to distinguish in Brazil whereas Portugal has around 10 million Portuguese speakers. Brazilian and European Portuguese differ in terms of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation mainly due to regional influences and their development as local languages. Besides these general differences in spellings and pronunciation, the word order is flexible in Brazilian Portuguese as compared to European Portuguese.
