Turkish
It is the official language of Turkey and spoken by majority (90%) of its population. It is also one of the official languages of Cyprus. It is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages and belongs to Altaic family of Ultra-Altaic family of languages. However some linguists classified it as part of Oghuz languages. It is estimated to be spoken by 65-73 million people worldwide with majority of Turkish people but some communities in Cyprus, Bulgaria, Greece and Eastern and Western Europe especially in Germany also speaks Turkish. It is closely related to other Turkic languages like Azerbaijani, Tatar, Uzbek etc. It is the descendant of Ottoman Turkish which was based on Arabic-Persian script. Later in 1928, Arabic script was replaced by Latin alphabets in an effort to modernize Turkey which since then has been in use. Turkish history is divided into old Turkish, mid Turkish and new Turkish.
Turkish dialects are often divided into Eastern and Western Dialects. Turkish language like all other Turkic languages is an agglutinative language that is it use suffixes added to root words to show grammatical relations and also in nouns to indicate gender and number. It has postposition rather than prepositions. It follows Subject-Object-Verb order but other combinations are also possible. It has 8 vowels and 21 consonants.
